Waste mineral oils possess all the characteristics of hazardous waste, not only due to their toxicity but also because of their carcinogenic, teratogenic, and mutagenic properties. They can cause immunity issues, diseases of the central and peripheral nervous systems (indirectly through food consumption), and are considered biohazardous. Due to their harmful effects on human health and ecosystems, they represent a significant risk of environmental pollution, affecting water, air, and soil. Inadequate and risky handling and management of this waste is one of the most critical challenges in environmental protection.
The law strictly prohibits the discharge or spilling of waste oils onto the soil, into surface and groundwater, and into sewage systems because of their harmful and long-term impacts on the environment and human health. The law also forbids the mixing and storage of used oils with other types of waste and regulates the discharge of residues from waste oil processing.
